Yesterday, while looking through some papers on my file desk, I came upon a beautifully written piece from my son Robert for his father's funeral.  Although it only contained the ending of his testimony for his father, the words were so profound, they brought me to tears.
 
"People are like stained-glassed windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within when the darkness sets in.  And dad's light will always be there to guide us. We need to remember that there is no cure for death except to enjoy the interval."

A young woman asked me why I am still here and my son is gone. I should be the one gone. Most nights I tell God I am finished here. My son died of a drug overdose. Even though I tried to get him help and clean, the drug won out.

​My response: I am so sorry for your kind of loss. I believe you did everything a mother could do. However, remember we are all on an individual journey. What he did in his life was his journey. For me, I know that before entering this world, we chose what we must go through; sometimes to grow, other times to pay a karmic debt.

I believe being raised a Catholic is neither right nor wrong.
 
However, I now look at life through a different lens.
 
I am spiritual with a soul that is not religious but eternal. We are spiritual beings who may be living by a certain faith we grew up in - yet if we look beyond our religious beliefs, we may come to realize we are so much more than our religion.
